Historians and theologians have long recognized that at the heart of the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation were five declarations (or “solas”) that distinguished the movement from other expressions of the Christian faith:

  1. Sola scriptura: “God’s Word alone”
  2. Sola fide: “Faith alone”
  3. Sola gratia: “Grace alone”
  4. Solo Christo: “Christ alone”
  5. Soli Deo gloria: “To the glory of God alone”

Five hundred years later, we live in a different time with fresh challenges to our faith. Yet these rallying cries of the Reformation continue to speak to us, addressing a wide range of contemporary issues.

Matthew Barrett

Ph.D., Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Matthew Barrett is associate professor of Christian theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, as well as executive editor of Credo Magazine. He is the editor of The Five Solas Series and the author of several books, including God's Word Alone, Reformation Theology, Salvation by Grace, and Owen on the Christian Life.

David VanDrunen

J.D., Northwestern University School of Law; Ph.D., Loyola University Chicago

David VanDrunen is Robert B. Strimple Professor of Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics at Westminster Seminary California. He is the author of Living in God’s Two Kingdoms: A Biblical Vision for Christianity and Culture and Divine Covenants and Moral Order: A Biblical Theology of Natural Law.

Stephen Wellum

Ph.D., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Stephen Wellum is professor of Christian theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and editor of the Southern Baptist Journal of Theology. Stephen lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife, Karen, and their five children.

Carl R. Trueman

Carl Trueman is professor of biblical and religious studies at Grove City College. He is the author of numerous books, including Grace Alone: Salvation as a Gift of God.

Thomas R. Schreiner

PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary

Thomas R. Schreiner is James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament and associate dean of Scripture and interpretation at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. The author of numerous books, he is the preaching pastor of Clifton Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
