Course Description

Historians and theologians alike have long recognized that at the heart of the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation were five declarations (or “solas”) that distinguished the movement from other expressions of the Christian faith.

Five hundred years later, we live in a different time with fresh challenges to our faith. Yet these rallying cries of the Reformation continue to speak to us, addressing a wide range of contemporary issues. The Five Solas series will help you understand the historical and biblical context of the five solas and how to live out the relevance of Reformation theology today.

In the Grace Alone course, scholar Carl Trueman looks at the historical and biblical roots of the doctrine that salvation is by grace alone, a free gift unmerited by human effort or works. Lessons examine the development of this theme in the early church through the Reformation to the Protestant confessions that still shape the church in the present day. Trueman also explores the biblical means of receiving God's grace through the fellowship of believers, the sacraments, and through the Word of God, and considers how we need to recover this doctrine in the face of today’s challenges.

By completing this course, you’ll gain:

  • Greater understanding of the doctrine of Grace alone and the history behind it
  • Insight into current challenges to the teachings of salvation
  • A thorough overview of salvation and the key figures from the Reformation who dedicated their lives to the doctrine of grace alone
  • Confidence in your growing knowledge through personalized review sessions and unit assessments
